Das bedeutet, dass die Fehlerseite nicht den richtigen Code zurück gibt. Sie müsste mit dem HTTP-Status-Code des Fehlers antworten, sie gibt aber "200" zurück, was bedeutet, dass alles ok ist.
Das passiert, weil du einen externen Pfad angibst - und damit ist auch das "Rätsel" der Umleitung erklärt.

Eine Notierung der Form

ErrorDocument 404 ...

veranlasst den Webserver, die Anfrage in jedem Fall umzuleiten - selbst wenn er sie zu sich selbst zurückleitet.

KlausO und Formiginni haben die richtige Form geschrieben. Wenn es nicht funktioniert, hast Du etwas falsch gemacht. Zeig uns doch bitte noch einmal den Inhalt der .htaccess NACH der Änderung, die KlausO und Formiginni vorschlagen.
